Samuel B. McKinney Manor

This mixed-use/senior housing development was developed by Mount Zion Housing Board (MZHD) in 1998 as a HUD financed project.   This project was a vision by the late Senior Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney.   The project consists of 64 one- and two- bedroom senior housing units and 4,500 square feet of ground floor commercial and retail space. One level of underground parking is provided. This was the first new construction project undertaken by MZHD.

The project is located on a major transportation line which makes it easy for seniors to access public transportation, visit local cultural institutions and services necessary for their livelihood.  The project received funding from several sources including the State Housing Trust Fund, City of Seattle Department of Housing and Office of Economic Development as well as the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

This new construction project replaced an existing 4-plex building built in the 1920’s that had reached the end of it’s useful life.  The new building has 61 Efficiency Dwelling Units (EDU) and 1-bedroom units that are slated for seniors and veterans that have been displaced by gentrification in the Central District.  Rent structure will be based on income levels allowing seniors to live in a culturally relevant area, that is affordable and convenient to the services desired by seniors. The Central District Freehold project received funding from several sources included the State Housing Trust Fund, King County Housing and City of Seattle Office of Housing along with private financing by Banner Bank. This new project was completed in November 2023.
